Article 36: Build a Folding Wall-Mounted Workbench

By: A Woodworker With Limited Space But Big Ambitions

When space is tight, a fold-down workbench lets you keep working without losing floor space. Great for garages, apartments, or even portable setups.

Materials

  • 1 sheet 3/4" plywood (cut to 48"x24")

  • 2x4 lumber (3 pieces @ 48", 2 pieces @ 24")

  • 2 heavy-duty hinges

  • 2 folding shelf brackets or chains

  • Wood screws (2 1/2")

  • Finish (polyurethane or oil)

Tools Needed

  • Drill/driver

  • Circular saw

  • Tape measure

  • Stud finder

  • Level

Assembly Steps

  1. Frame the Top
Build a 2x4 frame under the plywood top. Attach with screws.

  2. Attach Hinges to Wall
Locate wall studs and attach the hinged edge of the frame to the wall using lag screws.

  3. Install Support Brackets
Mount folding brackets underneath, or attach chain supports from wall studs.

  4. Finish the Surface
Sand and apply protective finish. Let dry overnight.

  5. Test the Fold
Ensure smooth movement and stable locking in upright and folded positions.
